Duane and his father, Morgan, take Rick inside and once they realise how clueless Rick is to the whole apocalypse, share the information they have with him. He managed to escape the hospital he was in, which was full of dead bodies and walkers locked up inside of rooms, and made his way to his home neighborhood where he is knocked unconcious by an unsuspecting Duane Jones, who believes Rick is a walker. He was unconcious during the outbreak and woke up days later with nobody around to help. Sometime before the beginning of the apocalypse, Rick was shot and put into a coma while on duty.
